There is an immense importance of veterans’ welfare because the quality of the next generation of soldiers that will join the Armed Forces is directly dependent on how we treat our veterans. This is the message that Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan stressed on while addressing the Devbhoomi Mega Veterans Rally on Saturday (October 11, 2025).
Organised under the aegis of Headquarters Uttarakhand Sub Area, at Jaswant Singh Ground, Garhi Cantt, Dehradun, the event drew over 5,000 veterans and was marked by patriotic fervour and community participation. The rally aimed to honour ex-servicemen, strengthen engagement with the veteran community, and announce key welfare initiatives.
Addressing the gathered veterans, General Chauhan urged them to foster positive narratives about the Indian Armed Forces, particularly through social media platforms.
Why did the CDS emphasise responsible use of social media?
CDS Chauhan stated, “Whenever you express your views on social media, do not post something that insults the armed forces,” he said. Emphasising the importance of national security discourse, he added, “In our country, there is a lack of strategic thinking, and if veterans play their part in this direction, they will help the country.”
With this, General Chauhan highlighted the intrinsic link between the welfare of veterans and the quality of future soldiers. “The quality of the next generation of soldiers that will join the Armed Forces is directly dependent on how we treat our veterans,” he stated. He also reflected on his contributions to veteran welfare, recalling his 2013 initiative to establish the Veteran Cell, now known as the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans (DIAV).
What role does Uttarakhand play in India’s defence and spiritual identity?
Describing Uttarakhand as a land where spiritualism and courage converge, the CDS paid tribute to the state’s dual identity as a cradle of sacred traditions and a proud contributor to India’s military strength. “Devbhoomi is home to sacred sites and a proud military heritage,” he remarked, lauding the contribution of soldiers from the region.
In a significant announcement, CDS Chauhan unveiled a new economic initiative aimed at boosting local livelihoods in Uttarakhand. Modelled on successful programmes from border states like Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Ladakh, the scheme will enable procurement of dairy, animal husbandry products, and fresh rations through negotiated contracts with local cooperatives.
“This will empower communities and strengthen the local economy,” he said.
What steps are being taken to support veterans in remote areas?
During a recent visit to Harshil, CDS Chauhan noted that many ex-servicemen had requested assistance in relocating to their ancestral homes. He assured the gathering that the matter is under active consideration. He also reiterated the commitment to ensure that veterans in remote and high-altitude areas receive targeted support.
On the healthcare front, the CDS confirmed the operational status of ECHS polyclinics in Pauri, Raiwala, and Vikasnagar. Furthermore, approval has been granted for three new clinics, with proposals to upgrade facilities in Clement Town, Champawat, and adjacent areas currently under review by the Ministry of Defence.
“This will ensure better healthcare access for our veterans,” General Chauhan affirmed.
New infra being developed for veterans’ welfare?
General Chauhan announced the upcoming establishment of a state-of-the-art Integrated Veterans Wellness and Seva Kendra at the Dehradun Military Station. Designed as a tech-enabled hub for veteran welfare services, the centre will provide a single-window interface for health, employment, and grievance redressal.
The CDS expressed confidence in its timely completion by Headquarters Uttarakhand Sub Area.
Meanwhile, the rally was graced by Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd), along with CDS Chauhan and other senior military dignitaries. The event featured a job fair with participation from 21 companies, stalls promoting government welfare schemes, banking services, and free medical camps for veterans and their families.
