Bangladesh On The Brink As Awami League Announces ‘Gherao’ Movement After Sheikh Hasina’s Death Verdict

In a statement on Thursday (November 27, 2025), the Awani League said, “The entire nation is witnessing how the illegal, usurping, killer-fascist Yunus clique has taken control of state power and plunged the country into rampant chaos. There is no rule of law in Bangladesh. There is no justice in the courts.”

Less than a fortnight after Bangladesh ICT found her guilty on multiple counts and sentenced her to death after being tried in absentia, the Bangladesh Awami League has announced a nationwide “Bangladesh Gherao” agitation beginning Friday (November 28, 2025), marking the most dramatic escalation since the verdict.

The party calls the verdict a “historic injustice” and says it has no option but to take its fight to the streets on an unprecedented scale. Awami League will protest, hold demonstrations and resistance marches across all districts and upazilas until Sunday (November 30, 2025).

Awami League leaders, workers, and supporters will fan out across the country, mobilising crowds from Dhaka’s political nerve centres to district towns and village panchayats. “Demanding the Resignation of Illegal Usurper, Killer–Fascist Yunus and Rejecting the Verdict of the Illegal ICT Tribunal,” it said on X.

Bangladesh Gherao: How massive will the protests be?

According to senior party officials, the agitation will be one of the largest coordinated political offensives Bangladesh has seen in the past decade. The plan includes surrounding Dhaka from multiple entry points, daily street mobilisations, demonstrations in every major town, municipality, and union-level panchayat.

Awami League cadres say they expect “millions on the streets”, signalling a full-scale political confrontation with the interim Yunus administration.

Bangladesh unrest: How is the government bracing for potential unrest?

The Yunus-led interim government has gone into emergency mode. A high-level meeting in Dhaka reviewed national security readiness, crowd-control measures, deployment plans for military and paramilitary forces, contingency strategies for riots or targeted violence. Security forces are already heavily deployed.

Dhaka has seen a sudden influx of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) units, armed police battalions, and Army quick-reaction teams. Officials anticipate rising tensions as the agitation peaks toward November 30.

Awami League programme: How it will protest Hasina’s death verdict?

In a statement on Thursday (November 27, 2025), the Awani League said, “The entire nation is witnessing how the illegal, usurping, killer-fascist Yunus clique has taken control of state power and plunged the country into rampant chaos. There is no rule of law in Bangladesh. There is no justice in the courts.”

Awami League added that the courts have become tools to protect the interests of the illegal regime and to serve their political motives. “But it has now fabricated baseless accusations regarding a legally purchased plot in an attempt to defame members of the Bangabandhu family. It feels like the kingdom of Hirak Raja.”

Noting how the image of the Bangabandhu family is being deliberately damaged, Hasina’s party said, “Instead of presenting evidence or following proper legal procedures, the regime is trying to disgrace the Bangabandhu family purely out of political malice. This is also an attempt to push them out of politics.”

The illegal usurpers fear this strength. They violated the Constitution to seize power, which is a capital offense. To save themselves, they are now using the entire state machinery to erase from politics the bearers of the Liberation War’s spirit and Bangabandhu’s ideals, it added in the post.
