The Indian government on Saturday (February 28, 2026) called for restraint and dialogue among all parties to the West Asia conflict, to prevent any escalation and worsening of the military operations launched by the US-Israel combine on Iran and the retaliatory action by Tehran.

“India is deeply concerned at the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement. “We urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians. Dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. Sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected,” the statement said.

The ministry said Indian missions in the region remained in contact with citizens. “Our Missions in the region are in touch with Indian nationals and have issued appropriate advisories asking them to remain vigilant, stay in contact with the Missions, and follow local security guidance,” the MEA said.

On the same day, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held separate conversations with the foreign ministers of Iran and Israel. Jaishankar conveyed India’s deep concern over the escalating situation in the region, reiterating New Delhi’s call for restraint and diplomacy.

Jaishankar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in the evening. “Had a telecon with Iranian FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi this evening. Shared India’s deep concern at the recent developments in Iran and the region,” he said in a post on X.

Jaishankar also spoke with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. “Reiterated India’s call for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions,” he said in another X post.

Weighing with his views on the West Asia conflict, India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh told a media event in New Delhi on Saturday (February 28, 2026): “The events are moving pretty fast. I am happy that we are in India. I think the present government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given macroeconomic and geopolitical stability.”

He said, “In West Asia, we have a large diaspora. We will have to continue to maintain our strategic partnerships.”

India also urged all sides to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity. New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation given the presence of millions of Indian nationals across West Asia, officials said.
