India’s embassy in Mexico on Monday (February 23, 2026) issued a safety advisory to all Indian nationals living in the country, cautioning them to stay indoors following an increase in street violence after that nation’s army killed a top drug cartel leader.
The Mexican Army killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as ‘El Mencho’ and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, on Sunday (February 22, 2026) during a military operation.
“Dear all Indian nationals in Mexico. There are ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity,” the embassy said in a warning posted on X.
“Indian nationals in Jalisco State (areas of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (areas of Reynosa and other municipalities), areas of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State should shelter in place until further notice,” it said.
“Avoid areas around law enforcement activity. Be aware of your surroundings. Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movements outside your shelter. Monitor local media for updates. Follow the directions of local authorities and in case of emergency, call 911. Avoid crowds,” the post said.
“Keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being via phone, text, and social media,” the embassy added in its safety advisory for Indian nationals living in Mexico.
The Indian embassy’s warnings came soon after Oseguera, wanted as a drug lord both in Mexico and the United States, was killed, leading to his supporters indulging in violence to vent their anger against the government action
