Indonesia has concluded a deal with India to buy the world’s best supersonic cruise missile, BrahMos, to enhance its coastal defence capabilities.
An international media report on Monday (March 9, 2026) from Jakarta quoted Indonesian Defence Ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait as confirming the agreement for the BrahMos missile with India.
BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, probably the longest-range artillery missile already in the Indian armed forces service, is a joint venture between India and Russia.
The deal between Indonesia and India is said to be worth up to $350 million, according to the report.
The BrahMos agreement was “part of the modernisation of military hardware and defence capabilities, especially in the maritime sector,” Rico was quoted as saying.
Indonesia is the second purchaser of BrahMos missiles from India, the first being the Philippines in 2022, an Indonesian neighbour in Southeast Asia.
Indian Defence Ministry officials indicated that Indonesia would get one battery of the BrahMos missiles under the present deal for its coastal defence.
They said Indonesia would arrange for funding of the purchase from one of its banks, and the final contract would be signed in the next quarter.
The deal was for a 290-km-range BrahMos missile. The supersonic cruise missile comes in different variants, having ground attack, anti-ship, and coastal defence roles.
