A senior Iranian official, who was involved in peace talks with the US being mediated through Pakistan, was critically injured in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran on Wednesday (April 1, 2026).

Kamal Kharazi, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, sustained the injuries when his home in Tehran was bombed, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency said in a report.

“In today’s bombing of residential homes in Tehran by the American-Zionist enemy, Dr Kamal Kharazi was injured,” Mehr reported.

The veteran diplomat, who previously held the post of foreign minister from 1997 to 2005 during the presidency of reformist ex-president Mohammad Khatami, was reportedly targeted in the airstrikes.

Kharazi was deeply involved in the backchannel talks for achieving peace in the latest West Asian war that began on February 28 when the US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran killed its then Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at his office premises in Tehran.

Since February 28, the West Asian war has escalated, with Iran retaliating with its missile and drone strikes on American and Israeli military assets in the Gulf region, involving Tehran’s neighbours, apart from blocking the maritime traffic through the narrow Strait of Hormuz.

The US and Israel have also stepped up bombings of Iran’s energy sources, apart from its nuclear facilities and other infrastructure.

Kharazi had previously appeared in an interview on an American television news platform in early March when he talked of Iran possessing the capability to continue the West Asian conflict for an extended period, while rejecting any possibility of a diplomatic solution to the war.

The bombing of Kharazi’s home comes at a time when Iran threatened to target American big tech companies, charging it of espionage aiding the US-Israel military attacks on its territory.
