While the crucial Strait of Hormuz remains blocked for several countries amid the tense West Asia conflict, Iran has kept the route open for India, describing it as a “friend” with which Tehran shares civilisational bonds. It’s because of this bond and the strong ties that a 7th India-flagged vessel Green Savi transited Hormuz on Friday (April 3, 2026), carrying over 46,000 MT tonnes LPG.

Just a few days after this development, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a crucial conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Sunday (April 5, 2026), signalling India’s active diplomatic engagement in the unfolding crisis. Prior to this, both the foreign ministers have held around 3-4 rounds of talks since the war began.

As tensions escalate sharply in West Asia, Jaishankar talked to his Iranian counterpart and shared, “Received a call from Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi of Iran. Discussed the present situation.”

The Iranian Embassy in India confirmed that the two leaders discussed “bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.”

How is India stepping up diplomatic outreach in the region?

Jaishankar’s call with Iran is part of a broader diplomatic push by New Delhi to remain engaged with key stakeholders in West Asia. He also spoke with other world leaders including UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.

While details of these conversations remain undisclosed, they underline India’s strategy of maintaining balanced ties across the region amid intensifying geopolitical fault lines.

In the past few weeks ever since the US-Israel-Iran war broke out, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also has held several rounds of conversations with different world leaders, including Gulf leaders.

What is happening on the ground in Iran and Tehran?

The diplomatic activity comes against the backdrop of continued strikes on Tehran and other Iranian targets, with the conflict now entering a highly volatile phase. The US and Israel have intensified attacks on Iranian infrastructure while Iran has responded with strikes across the Gulf region.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has dramatically escalated rhetoric, issuing both a 48-hour ultimatum and fresh warnings of large-scale attacks. In a post on Truth Social recently, he said, “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F’ Strait, you crazy b*s, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.”

In a subsequent interview, Trump added that while there is a “good chance” of a deal, failure to reach one would result in the US blowing “everything up”, and potentially “taking over the oil”.
