Russia-Ukraine War: Russian Drone Hits Grain Ship Near Odesa As LNG Tanker Sinks in Mediterranean

The ship, identified as “BULL,” was struck shortly after departing the port and while heading toward the Bosphorus Strait, a key maritime gateway linking the Black Sea to global markets. Ukraine’s navy said one crew member was injured, though the captain declined evacuation or outside assistance and continued the voyage along its designated route.

More than four years into the Russia-Ukraine war, the Black Sea, a lifeline for Ukraine’s wartime economy, is again witnessing attacks on shipping routes. A Russian drone strike damaged a civilian Panama-flagged vessel transporting corn near Ukraine’s Chornomorsk port in the Odesa region.

Ukraine ships about 90% of its exports via the Odesa port hub. According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority the drone strike hit the vessel when it was en route out of the port and some of the crew were injured. However, the extent of the damage to the ship hasn’t been specified by the ports authority.

Why are Ukraine’s ports so critical in the war?

Ukraine ships around 90% of its exports through the Odesa port hub, making the region one of the most strategically important economic corridors in the war. Over the past year, Russian forces have repeatedly targeted Ukrainian port infrastructure, grain storage facilities and maritime logistics.

These strikes have triggered higher freight and insurance costs, disruptions to global grain supply chains, financial pressure on Ukrainian exporters. Further, local businesses have also been forced to lower export prices to remain competitive, further straining the country’s wartime economy.

Russian LNG Tanker sinks in the Mediterranean

In a separate development linked to the broader conflict, a Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker sank in the Mediterranean Sea after explosions and a fire. The vessel, Arctic Metagaz, went down between Libya and Malta, roughly 130 nautical miles north of the Libyan port of Sirte, according to Libyan port officials.

The tanker was reportedly carrying around 62,000 tonnes of LNG when the blasts occurred.

Russia’s transport ministry said 30 Russian crew members were on board, but Maltese authorities later confirmed they were rescued safely in a lifeboat during an operation by Malta’s armed forces.

Did Russia blame Ukraine for the tanker explosion?

Moscow has accused Ukraine of carrying out the attack using uncrewed sea drones launched from the Libyan coast. However, Ukraine’s SBU state security service has not commented on the allegation, and Libyan authorities said the exact cause of the fire remains unclear.

Since the conflict began in 2022, both Russia and Ukraine have increasingly relied on naval drones, missile strikes and port attacks to disrupt each other’s economic lifelines.
