Amid rapidly escalating tensions in West Asia, US President Donald Trump has issued a stark 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, warning of severe military consequences if Tehran fails to reach a deal or reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This latest warning from Trump marks the final phase of a previously announced 10-day deadline.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out–48 hours before all hell will rain down on them. Glory be to GOD! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Following Trump’s latest message for Iran, former International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei has sounded the alarm, urging Gulf nations to step in diplomatically to prevent a catastrophic escalation. In a strongly worded message, he appealed, “Please, once again, do everything in your power before this madman turns the region into a ball of fire.”

Expanding his concern globally, ElBaradei also questioned the effectiveness of international institutions, asking the United Nations if “nothing can be done to stop this madness?”

How has the situation on the ground escalated in Iran?

The ultimatum comes as intensified US-Israeli strikes and Iranian retaliation continue to rock key regions.

Over the past few weeks, Tehran has witnessed repeated attacks, with reports of heavy damage and rising uncertainty among civilians. Iran has responded with strikes across the Gulf and strategic targets linked to US allies. The broader West Asia conflict has now spread beyond borders, affecting regional stability and global markets.

The war, now going on for over a month now, has evolved into a multi-front confrontation, with both sides escalating rhetoric and military action.

US-Israel strike Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant

Adding to global anxiety, recent US-Israeli strikes targeted areas near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, a critical facility on the country’s southern coast. The strike reportedly killed a security guard. Russia, which is involved in the plant’s operations, began evacuating personnel, while Iran warned that any further attacks could trigger radioactive fallout affecting Gulf nations.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed concern, reiterating that nuclear facilities must not be targeted under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, the latest escalation follows a brief diplomatic window. On March 26, Trump had paused strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure, claiming negotiations were “going very well” at the time. The pause was extended until Monday (April 6, 2026) following what he described as a request from Iran.

He had stated earlier, “As per Iranian Government request… I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction… Talks are ongoing and… they are going very well.” However, with no breakthrough, the pause has now given way to renewed threats and a final countdown.
