The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Indian Army’s Northern Command, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, met Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Kavinder Gupta in Leh on Saturday (September 27, 2025) to review the current situation in the Union Territory.
Their discussions centred on the overall security landscape, emerging threats along the borders, and the operational environment in Ladakh. Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining high levels of vigilance, especially in light of regional sensitivities and the strategic significance of the area.
“Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, GOC-in-C Northern Command, accompanied by Lt Gen Hitesh Bhalla, GOC Fire & Fury Corps, called on LG Shri @KavinderGupta at Raj Niwas and briefed him on the security situation and emerging developments in the region,” Office of the LG, Ladakh posted on X.
What is happening in Ladakh?
The development assumes significance amid as the region witnessed some violent protests on September 24, 2025. Demonstrators set fire to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office and a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vehicle in the town.
The unrest is linked to growing public anger over demands for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, including statehood and Sixth Schedule protections.
At least four people were killed and over 70 injured in the violence. Authorities imposed a curfew in Leh-Ladakh’s largest town and its administrative headquarters, to prevent further flare-ups and restore order.
Meanwhile, the Ladakh police has arrested climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, accusing him of inciting the unrest. Officials claimed he misled people with “provocative references” to Arab Spring-style movements and youth-led protests in Nepal.
How is civil-military coordination being strengthened?
A major focus of the meeting was the need for greater coordination between the armed forces and the civil administration to ensure peace and stability. Preparedness and synergy were highlighted as critical to managing contingencies and responding to any security challenge.
The Lt Governor commended the Army’s efforts in guarding the frontiers and protecting local populations. Lieutenant General Sharma reaffirmed the Northern Command’s commitment to safeguarding the Union Territory’s security and territorial integrity.
