India’s engagement with Europe is gaining fresh momentum, with high-level parliamentary and diplomatic interactions in New Delhi signalling a deepening strategic partnership. The latest meetings between Indian leaders and a visiting delegation of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) come close on the heels of renewed push towards the long-pending India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described the relationship as entering a “new phase of engagement,” underlining growing convergence across sectors such as trade, technology, connectivity and security. Notably, his latest meeting with European leaders comes just a few weeks after his Brussels visit.
High-level India-EU meetings: What happened?
The visiting European Parliament delegation, led by Angelika Niebler, held extensive discussions with India’s top leadership, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar.
A key highlight was the first-ever meeting of the India-European Parliament Parliamentary Friendship Group at Sansad Bhavan, led by BJP MP Anurag Thakur. The initiative is being seen as a major step in strengthening parliamentary diplomacy, an often underutilised but critical pillar of international relations.
During the talks, both sides emphasised the strength of the India-EU strategic partnership and the importance of shared democratic values, with a focus on enhancing institutional and people-to-people ties.
Exuding confidence that “the European Parliament will be a pillar of support in this new era”, EAM Jaishankar shared that they discussed the new chapter in India-EU ties, and the growing convergence between the two sides. “As the agenda of cooperation expands, so too will be the levels of comfort,” he added.
How does this link to the India-EU trade deal momentum?
The renewed engagement comes shortly after Jaishankar’s visit to Brussels, where discussions with European leaders focused heavily on advancing the proposed India-EU FTA. Dubbed “mother of all deals”, the India-EU trade deal is widely seen as a potential game-changer, aimed at unlocking economic potential, boosting bilateral trade and investment.
The launch of the Parliamentary Friendship Group marks a strategic shift towards deeper legislative engagement between India and the EU. Such exchanges enable lawmakers to align on policy frameworks, share best practices and build long-term institutional trust.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted that parliamentary interactions are key to strengthening democratic institutions and fostering mutual understanding. “Looking forward to further deepening our parliamentary exchanges and people-to-people connections,” he said in a post on X.
What are the key areas of growing India-Europe collaboration?
India and the European Union are increasingly aligning on a wide range of strategic sectors. Beyond trade, collaboration is expanding into technology partnerships, digital infrastructure, clean energy transitions and global security frameworks.
The emphasis on resilient supply chains has gained urgency amid global disruptions, with both sides looking to reduce overdependence on single geographies and build trusted economic corridors.
For India, closer ties with Europe represent a crucial pillar of its broader geopolitical and economic strategy. As global power dynamics shift, strengthening partnerships with like-minded democracies offers both economic opportunities and strategic leverage.
