Indian security agencies have arrested two men suspected of being linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) in a coordinated operation across states, officials confirmed on Wednesday (September 10, 2025). The action was carried out jointly by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, the Jharkhand Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and Ranchi Police.

According to investigators, the operation exposed what they described as a significant terrorist conspiracy, with explosives-related material, documents, and maps seized during raids.

Who were the men arrested?

The prime accused, identified as Ashhar Danish from Bokaro, Jharkhand, was apprehended in Ranchi. Danish, the son of a senior lawyer at the Tenughat Court, had been staying at Tabarak Lodge in Ranchi’s Islamnagar area. His family background, with a teacher mother and a younger brother studying law in Patna, has drawn attention to how he became involved in suspected extremist activities.

Another suspect, Aftab, was detained in Delhi during simultaneous raids carried out by the joint teams. Both men are being questioned to determine the extent of their links to ISIS and their possible role in wider networks.

What did police recover during the raids?

Jharkhand ATS Superintendent of Police Rishabh Jha said that nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and other chemicals and metals commonly used for making explosives were seized from Danish’s possession. In addition, objectionable material, documents, and maps were recovered. The Delhi Police’s Special Cell described the seizures as evidence of bomb-making attempts and logistical planning.

Officials said electronic devices found in the lodge are now being analysed to trace contacts and communication. These devices may hold information about sleeper cells or accomplices active in other states.

How wide is the investigation expected to go?

Police sources said at least eight more individuals have been detained across different states, and their roles are under investigation. Two additional suspects were also picked up in Delhi in connection with the case. Authorities are now piecing together whether these arrests point to an organised module or loosely connected operatives working under foreign influence.

Investigators are probing links between Danish and international handlers, as well as possible recruitment efforts in Jharkhand and neighbouring states. According to police, the possibility of sleeper cells operating across India cannot be ruled out.
