The Pakistan-China Friendship Group held its first-ever meeting at the Parliament House in Islamabad, reaffirming the “iron brotherhood” and strategic partnership between the two countries.
Chaired by Senator Sherry Rehman, the meeting emphasised the importance of expanding cooperation beyond infrastructure to key areas such as trade, agriculture, education, and climate resilience.
What did Sherry Rehman say about Pakistan-China ties?
Senator Rehman commended China’s long-standing support for Pakistan’s economic and social progress, particularly through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
She said greater collaboration in agriculture could revitalize Pakistan’s rural economy, create sustainable livelihoods, and ensure food security.
“China has been an enduring partner in Pakistan’s development journey. Strengthening cooperation in sectors that directly impact people’s lives, such as agriculture and education, will ensure shared prosperity,” she noted.
Why did the Chinese Ambassador pledge commitment to Pakistan?
Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong reaffirmed Beijing’s “unwavering commitment” to Pakistan’s sovereignty and development, unveiling a range of new initiatives aimed at deepening bilateral ties.
These include the construction of 100 hospitals in Balochistan, the establishment of industrial and development zones to create local jobs, and agricultural projects aimed at improving productivity and rural incomes.
Ambassador Jiang also announced new student exchange programmes and technical training opportunities to strengthen educational and technological cooperation.
How does the plan align with China’s?
He highlighted that these initiatives align with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, which emphasises economic transformation, green development, and climate action.
“Empowering farmers and enhancing agricultural output are central to poverty reduction and industrial growth,” Jiang said, reaffirming that China’s support for Pakistan remains steadfast “under all circumstances.”
How was the meeting perceived by the two sides?
Senator Sherry Rehman concluded by thanking the Chinese delegation, describing the meeting as “a renewed step toward deepening understanding and cooperation between our two nations.”
The meeting was attended by a wide range of Pakistani senators, including Naseema Ehsan, Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Ashraf Ali Jatoi, Faisal Saleem Rahman, and others, marking a strong display of bipartisan support for Pakistan-China friendship.
