Security agencies have significantly stepped up measures across Srinagar and large parts of Jammu and Kashmir following intelligence inputs warning of a possible targeted terror attack in the coming days, prompting intensified frisking, vehicle checks, and anti-infiltration operations along the International Border and hinterland areas.
In Srinagar and adjoining districts, Jammu and Kashmir Police, assisted by paramilitary forces, have established multiple checkpoints where two-wheelers and cars—particularly those bearing out-of-state number plates—are being thoroughly checked.
Why was security tightened in Jammu and Kashmir?
A senior police official said agencies have received “strong inputs regarding the movement of ultras and the possibility of a targeted attack,” making enhanced frisking unavoidable. Two-wheelers, officials noted, are often used in such strikes for quick movement and escape.
Over the past two weeks, police have detained, summoned, and questioned dozens of suspects as part of efforts to trace militant movement and verify threat perceptions.
Security agencies are also on the lookout for a white Ford EcoSport suspected of ferrying militants, an official from south Kashmir said, adding that surveillance has been tightened across key routes.
How have the Army and the BSF increased border vigil?
Simultaneously, the Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and J&K Police have intensified their vigil along vulnerable stretches near the International Border in the Jammu region after intelligence warned that dense winter fog could be exploited by Pakistan-based terrorists to infiltrate into Indian territory.
Search operations, area domination exercises, and aggressive patrolling have been launched in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, and Rajouri districts, as well as the Chatroo forest belt in Kishtwar.
Intelligence inputs indicate that terror launchpads across the border opposite Hiranagar, Ghagwal, Ramgarh, and Akhnoor sectors in the Kathua–Samba–Jammu belt have been activated over the past two days, triggering large-scale cordon-and-search operations.
Where are these security actions being taken?
In Kishtwar district alone, security forces carried out searches in more than a dozen forest villages for the second consecutive day after locals reported suspicious movement.
Areas where vigilance has been heightened include Bobiya border outpost, Tappan, Mareed, Paharpur, Pansar, Maniyari, Tarnah Nallah, Bein Nallah, Kishanpur Kandi, Chak Chabbey, Dolka Samyal, and Rukh-e-Sarkar in Kathua; Babar Nallah, Paloora, Treyal, Mansar, and Chilla Danga in Samba; and Pragwal and surrounding areas in the Akhnoor sector.
How did the no contact with militants happened yet?
While no contact with militants has been established so far, officials said operations remain ongoing, stressing that the searches are also aimed at area domination amid harsh winter conditions and dense fog cover.
The heightened alert comes as the weather department forecast heavy rainfall or snowfall at isolated places across Jammu–Kashmir–Ladakh–Gilgit–Baltistan–Muzaffarabad on December 21.
Fog has already disrupted air traffic, with multiple flight cancellations and delays reported from Jammu and partial disruptions at Srinagar airport.
Earlier this month, BSF intelligence had warned that over 100 terrorists were waiting across the Line of Control for an opportunity to infiltrate, with security forces keeping close watch on 69 active launchpads—underscoring the persistent cross-border threat as winter sets in.
