The Indian Navy has stepped up its global outreach in a significant display of maritime diplomacy spanning continents, with INS Trikand’s mission in Mozambique and INS Sudarshini’s cultural voyage to France, underlining India’s expanding footprint across the Indian Ocean and beyond.
The twin deployments reflect a calibrated strategy from Africa to Europe, blending hard security cooperation with soft power projection. The visits also coincide with the Indian Navy organising the second edition of IOS Sagar initiative. 16 nations recently completed the harbour phase in Kochi.
INS Trikand’s Mozambique port call: What makes the visit significant?
INS Trikand’s arrival at Maputo comes at a time when India is deepening engagement in the South-West Indian Ocean Region (IOR), a zone critical for sea lanes, trade, and regional stability. The deployment goes beyond a routine port call, signalling India’s intent to strengthen bilateral maritime ties with Mozambique, enhance presence in a strategically vital littoral region, and support partners in capacity-building and security cooperation.
Notably, eight ships from the Indian Navy and Coast Guard have made port-calls to Mozambique’s coastal cities of Maputo, Beira and Nacala, over the last one year.
How is India combining security with humanitarian outreach?
In a move that underscores India’s ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ (SAGAR/MAHASAGAR) vision, INS Trikand is delivering critical humanitarian assistance alongside defence cooperation.
The ship has brought essential medicines and relief supplies for flood-hit regions, with additional shipments of 500 metric tonnes of rice expected to follow. This humanitarian push is complemented by medical camps, community outreach, training exchanges, and joint naval exercises including firefighting, VBSS (Visit, Board, Search and Seizure), and surveillance operations.
Besides, 500 MT of rice will shortly arrive from India to further augment the humanitarian assistance. INS Trikand’s visit will culminate in joint surveillance of Mozambique’s Exclusive Economic Zone, reinforcing maritime domain awareness and coastal security.
What does INS Sudarshini’s Europe voyage represent?
While INS Trikand anchors India’s strategic outreach, INS Sudarshini is advancing its cultural diplomacy across global waters.
Arriving at the historic French port of Sète as part of the Lokayan-26 transoceanic expedition, the sail training ship is participating in the prestigious ‘Escale à Sète’ maritime festival, one of Europe’s largest gatherings of traditional tall ships.
Having already covered over 5,500 nautical miles with port calls in Oman, Egypt, and Malta, the ship is acting as a “floating ambassador” throughout its voyage, showcasing India’s maritime heritage and fostering international goodwill.
Together, the two deployments illustrate a dual-track naval doctrine, with INS Trikand representing operational readiness, regional security cooperation, and humanitarian assistance, while INS Sudarshini embodies cultural outreach, heritage diplomacy, and people-to-people connect.
India expanding its influence across the Indo-Pacific and beyond?
The answer increasingly appears to be yes. From the African coastline to European ports, the Indian Navy is positioning itself as a first responder in crises, a reliable security partner, and a cultural bridge between regions. These engagements also reinforce India’s credibility as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region.
