Pak Army Chief in Iran to Thrash Out Peace, Said to Visit US Next

Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir, on Wednesday (April 15, 2026), landed in Tehran to meet with the Iranian leadership and was preparing to visit Washington to meet with Trump administration officials, to bring both sides back to the negotiation table.

With Pakistan Army’s reputation at stake over the failed US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad last week, this was seen as Munir’s last-ditch attempt to make the peace talks a success through a second sitting.

Meanwhile, supporting Munir’s diplomatic push, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif reached out to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, positioning his nation as the key mediator in the US-Iran negotiations.

In Tehran, Munir met with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, who headed the Iranian side in the Islamabad talks last week.

Though details of their discussion were not made public, the immediate travel from Tehran to Washington by Munir indicated it was related to the peace negotiations between the US and Iran to end the West Asian war that began on February 28 and was temporarily paused through a ceasefire announcement.

Sharif, meanwhile, was in Riyadh at the same time, discussing the next phase of the US-Iran peace talks. He later landed in Doha.
