From Foreign Secretary’s US, France and Germany visit to recent engagements with Finland, Sweden, among others, India has significantly intensified its diplomatic outreach across Europe, with a strong focus on strategic technologies, defence, and clean energy collaboration. Notably, all this is taking place amid global geopolitical churn and the ongoing West Asia conflict.

At the India-Germany Foreign Office Consultations in Berlin, co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Misri and Germany’s State Secretary Géza Andreas von Geyr, both sides agreed to bolster cooperation in defence, green hydrogen, renewable energy, and critical technologies. The discussions also covered pressing global issues, including the West Asia conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Following a comprehensive review of bilateral ties, spanning trade, security, technology, sustainable development, and mobility, India and Germany, marking their 75 years of diplomatic relations, committed to deepening collaboration in emerging technologies, digital governance, industrial partnerships, and development cooperation in third countries.

What role is France playing in India’s diplomatic outreach?

India is also strengthening its engagement with France through parliamentary diplomacy, a key pillar of its foreign policy. Days after Misri’s Paris visit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met a delegation from the French Senate Friendship Group, led by Senator Mireille Jouve, in New Delhi.

Sharing the details on social media, Jaishankar said, “Pleased to meet the French Senate Friendship Group led by Senator Mireille Jouve in Delhi… Our conversation covered different aspects of the bilateral relationship. Confident that regular Parliamentary exchanges will further enhance our Special Global Strategic Partnership.”

The engagement reflects India’s efforts to deepen ties with France across defence, space, climate action, and global governance, reinforcing an already robust strategic partnership.

How is India strengthening its partnership with the United States?

Parallel to its European outreach, India continues to deepen ties with Washington through sustained diplomatic engagement.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, hosted senior American leaders, including Ambassador Jamieson Greer and former US National Security Adviser Robert C O’Brien, at India House.

“Honored to host Amb. Jamieson Greer and Amb. Robert O’Brien… We had productive conversation on a range of bilateral cooperation opportunities. Also discussed important developments across the world,” Kwatra said.

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across defence, technology, trade, and Indo-Pacific security, underlining the strength of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

Momentum also building in India’s Nordic and European ties?

India’s diplomatic push is also visible in its growing engagement with Nordic and European countries such as Finland, Sweden, and Poland. Finland’s Consul General Erik af Hällström highlighted the momentum following President Alexander Stubb’s recent India visit, noting:
“Finland and India have strong bilateral relations… there is potential to double [trade].”

Sweden’s Consul General Sven Ostberg emphasised the depth of economic ties, pointing out that 280 Swedish companies in India employ around 2 lakh people directly and 2 million indirectly, with plans to further expand trade by 2032.

Poland’s Consul General Tomasz Wielgomas also underlined growing economic synergies, stating, “Polish-Indian relations were always good… we also have a lot of opportunities to make a good business together.”

He added that Maharashtra holds strong investment potential due to its scale and workforce. “Maharashtra is almost exactly the size of Poland. In Poland lives only 38 to 40 million people. In Maharashtra lives something like 100 million more. So this is the potential. And there are already a couple of Polish investments in Maharashtra,” he said.

Mumbai’s role in India’s global diplomatic network

Mumbai continues to serve as a key hub for international diplomacy, hosting around 110 Consuls General, making it central to India’s global engagement. Maharashtra Minister Jaykumar Rawal noted, “In today’s world, peace and harmony require global cooperation… This initiative strengthens ties between Maharashtra, India, and the international community.”

India’s multi-pronged outreach underscores its role as a stable and proactive global partner. From Berlin to New Delhi and Washington to Mumbai, India is reinforcing its multi-aligned foreign policy, balancing strategic, economic, and security interests across continents.
