Saturday, September 13, 2025, will always be remembered as Prime Minister Narendra Modi set foot in Manipur, his first visit since ethnic violence erupted more than two years ago. The conflict, which began in May 2023, pitted the Meiteis of the Imphal valley against the Kuki-Zo tribes in the surrounding hills.

PM Modi’s Manipur trip since the violent clashes carried both symbolic and political weight, signaling New Delhi’s intent to rebuild trust and push for reconciliation. On his remarkable visit, the prime minister also inaugurated multiple development projects worth over Rs 1,200 crore at Imphal in Manipur.

Addressing the gathering, he stated that projects worth thousands of crores have been inaugurated and launched today for the development of Manipur, further adding that these projects will enhance the ease of living for the people and strengthen the infrastructure in the region.

PM Modi’s Churachandpur visit: What happened there?

The prime minister’s scheduled helicopter ride from Imphal to Churachandpur on Saturday had to be cancelled due to heavy rain, forcing him to undertake a 90-minute road journey instead. He was originally set to fly directly to a helipad in Churachandpur after landing in Imphal, but persistent downpours made the aerial route unsafe.

Opting for the road, his convoy passed through areas lined with residents who had gathered to greet him despite the weather. Reflecting on the change of plans, the Prime Minister said, “I was happy that I couldn’t take the chopper as it gave me the opportunity to witness the love and affection showered by the people of Manipur along the way.”

Heavy rains forced last-minute changes in the itinerary. Modi’s helicopter ride from Mizoram was cancelled, and he had to make the journey by road through buffer zones guarded by central forces. Along the way, his convoy crossed a bridge blown up during the 2023 clashes and passed homes gutted by arson.

Inaugurating development projects worth Rs 7,300 crore and meeting displaced families, he emphasized that peace was essential for progress. “A new dawn of hope and confidence is awaiting Manipur,” he said, urging people to embrace dialogue and harmony.

What steps are being taken for displaced families?

The Prime Minister announced that the government would help construct 7,000 homes for those displaced, while a special package of nearly Rs 3,000 crore has been approved for Manipur. An additional Rs 500 crore has been earmarked specifically for relief and rehabilitation.

More than 60,000 people were uprooted by the conflict, with around 250 losing their lives.

How is the government addressing youth concerns?

Speaking to tribal youth, Modi acknowledged their struggles and aspirations. He assured them of stronger local governance structures, proper allocation of funds, and policies that would address their concerns directly. His words sought to reassure a generation caught in the crossfire of conflict.

What economic relief did PM Modi announce in Imphal?

Back in Imphal, after inaugurating projects worth Rs 1,200 crore, Modi highlighted recent GST reductions. Essential items like soap, shampoo, clothes, and footwear will now cost less, while lower GST on cement and construction materials is expected to aid rebuilding. Cuts in taxes on hotels and eateries, he said, would boost tourism and create new opportunities for local businesses.

PM Modi remarked that youth in those regions received new opportunities. “The 21st century belongs to the East and the North East”, he added.

Manipur’s growth rate was less than 1%, the prime minister said, further noting that today, Manipur is progressing many times faster than before. A new phase of infrastructure development has begun in Manipur, PM Modi expressed.

How PM highlighted Manipur’s role in Op Sindoor?

In his address, the prime minister praised the youth of Manipur for their contributions to India’s defence and sports, highlighting their role in Operation Sindoor where Indian soldiers displayed exceptional valour, and pays tribute to martyr Deepak Chingakham. He emphasized that Indian culture is incomplete without Manipuri culture.

Can dialogue finally bring peace to Manipur?

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, but negotiations are slowly gaining ground. Modi welcomed ongoing talks between groups from the hills and valley districts, calling them vital to “build a bridge of harmony.” While challenges remain, the Prime Minister’s visit signaled a renewed push to move from conflict toward reconciliation.
