Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), on Saturday (May 2, 2026) commenced his four-day official visit to Myanmar to further strengthen bilateral maritime ties. CNS Admiral Tripathi will be in the country till Tuesday (May 5, 2026). The visit by the Chief of the Naval Staff reaffirms the longstanding India-Myanmar bonds of friendship.
CNS Admiral Tripathi’s ongoing visit is seen as part of ongoing efforts to deepen defence cooperation and reinforce engagement between the two navies in a strategically important region.
Admiral Tripathi Myanmar visit: Who will the Navy Chief meet?
During the four-day visit to Myanmar, CNS Admiral Tripathi will engage in bilateral discussions with key leadership of Myanmar’s armed forces, including General Ye Win Oo, Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar Armed Forces; General U Htun Aung, Defence Minister of Myanmar; Admiral Htein Win, Commander-in-Chief, Myanmar Navy.
These high-level interactions are expected to review ongoing cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration.
What are the key focus areas of the discussions?
The engagements will focus on reviewing existing bilateral maritime cooperation while also enhancing operational-level linkages. Both sides are expected to deliberate on expanding collaboration in areas such as maritime security, capacity building, capability enhancement and training, reflecting shared priorities in the region.
“These interactions will provide an opportunity to review ongoing bilateral maritime cooperation, enhance operational-level linkages, and explore new avenues for collaboration between the two navies,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
What engagements are planned during the visit?
CNS Admiral Tripathi’s visit includes a series of operational and ceremonial engagements, including visits to Myanmar Navy’s Central Naval Command, Naval Training Command, and No. 1 Fleet. He will also lay a wreath at the Myanmar Armed Forces Fallen Heroes’ War Memorial. These engagements will cover a wide range of defence cooperation matters, with particular focus on maritime security, capacity building, capability enhancement and training.
The Indian Navy and Myanmar Navy maintain regular interaction through multiple structured mechanisms, including defence Cooperation Meetings and Staff Talks, training exchanges and operational interactions, joint activities such as the India–Myanmar Naval Exercise (IMNEX) and Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR).
Naval troops of both the countries also engage in port visits and hydrographic surveys. Both navies also collaborate in multilateral forums and capability-building initiatives.
What role does Myanmar play in India’s broader maritime engagement?
Myanmar has been an active participant in several Indian Navy-led initiatives, including the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), MILAN exercise, International Fleet Review, Goa Maritime Conclave, IOS SAGAR, and the Admiral’s Cup.The visit underscores the importance of India–Myanmar ties in ensuring maritime security and stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
By strengthening cooperation in training, operations and capability development, both countries aim to enhance their ability to address evolving maritime challenges.
