Mountain Radars, S-400 Maintenance, BrahMos Fire Control: DAC’s Rs 67,000 Crore Boost to Armed Forces

Indian Army, Navy and Air Force are set to get a mega Rs 67,000 crore shot in the arm as the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Tuesday (August 5) cleared several proposals. Whether it is IAF’s Mountain Radar or the procurement of BhahMos Fire Control System, the armed forces will soon see some high-tech weaponry becoming a part of their operations.
Under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the DAC has given its green signal to various proposals amounting to a total cost of about Rs 67,000 crore. Defence Acquisition Council serves as the apex decision-making body in the Defence Ministry for deciding on new policies and capital acquisitions.
These proposals range from MALE RPAs, Mountain Radars, ASW crafts, BMP night sights, S-400 maintenance to the sustenance of C-17 & C-130J fleets.
What are the proposals for Indian Army?
Among the Rs 67,000 crore proposals cleared by the DAC include the procurement of Thermal Imager-based Driver Night Sight for BMP for the Indian Army. With this systems, the BMP’s night driving capability would enhance significantly and it would also provide higher mobility and operational advantage to the mechanised infantry.
What are the proposals for Indian Navy?
For the Indian Navy, the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) was accorded for the procurement of Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, BrahMos Fire Control System & Launchers and Upgradation of BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile System. With the procurement of Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, the navy would become capable of detecting, classifying and neutralising threats in anti-submarine warfare missions.
What proposals have been cleared for IAF?
Among the Rs 67,000 crore proposals is the procurement of Mountain Radars and Upgradation of SAKSHAM/SPYDER Weapon System. With the inclusion of Mountain Radars, Indian Air Force’s surveillance capability along and across the borders in the mountainous region will get a boost.
On the other hand, the upgradation of SAKSHAM/SPYDER System for integration with Integrated Air Command and Control System will enhance the air defence capability.
Additionally, the DAC has also cleared the proposals to procure Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) for the armed forces. This would be a significant addition as MALE RPAs can carry multiple payloads & weapons and operate at longer ranges for long endurance missions.
In addition, DAC has also accorded AoN for sustenance of C-17 and C-130J fleets and comprehensive annual maintenance contract of S-400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System.
