Strengthening the operational readiness of one of its most potent artillery systems, the Indian Army has awarded Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) a supply order for the overhaul and upgradation of in-service first-generation Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) and Battery Command Posts (BCPs).

The initiative will be executed in partnership with the Army’s 510th Advanced Base Workshop (ABW), marking a major milestone in public–private collaboration for the life-cycle support of critical combat platforms.

Why did the Army rope in TASL?

The supply order was formally handed over to Tata Advanced Systems at a ceremony in New Delhi, reflecting the Army’s emphasis on sustained availability, faster turnaround, and indigenised maintenance of frontline weapon systems.

The programme aims to extend the service life and enhance the performance of the Pinaka MLRS, a core element of India’s long-range rocket artillery capability.

What would Army-TASL combine do about Pinaka?

As part of the project, TASL and 510 ABW will jointly undertake a pilot overhaul of selected Pinaka launchers and command posts in the initial phase.

Upon successful completion, the remaining systems will be overhauled by 510 ABW of the Corps of EME, with Tata Advanced Systems providing critical spares, technical support, quality assurance, and coordination with original equipment manufacturers.

What is the Pinaka MLRS?

Developed by DRDO in collaboration with Indian industry, the Pinaka MLRS is an all-weather, indirect-fire artillery system designed to deliver intense and accurate firepower against high-value targets.

Mounted on an 8×8 high-mobility vehicle, it features automated shoot-and-scoot capability, inertial navigation-based digital fire control, and net-centric operations, enabling rapid deployment and high survivability in challenging terrain.

How has TASL been part of the Pinaka project?

Tata Advanced Systems has been a key partner in the Pinaka programme since 1989 and has achieved nearly 80 per cent indigenous content in the system.

The company has delivered a substantial number of Pinaka launchers currently deployed with the Indian Army, with successive production batches incorporating major upgrades to improve commonality and combat effectiveness.

The launcher is capable of firing Pinaka Mk-I rockets and is designed to seamlessly integrate guided rockets with minimal modifications.

TASL continues to support DRDO in the development of extended-range guided variants with ranges of up to 120 km and 300 km, significantly enhancing India’s deep-strike and deterrence capabilities.

The latest contract reinforces Tata Advanced Systems’ position in India’s land combat systems domain and aligns with the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat push to ensure indigenous sustainment, modernisation, and long-term strategic autonomy in defence.
