Indian Army conducts ‘Jal Rahat’ flood relief exercise at IIT Guwahati

The Indian Army’s Red Horns Division under Gajraj Corps executed a joint flood relief exercise, Jal Rahat on Saturday (April 18, 2026) at IIT Guwahati, demonstrating disaster response and prepared ahead of the monsoon season.
According to an official post on X, the exercise brought multiple agencies together including the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
The goal was to improve inter-agency coordination, operational readiness, and the use of advanced technologies during flood rescue operations.
The exercise recreated real life flood situations, with a specialist team carrying out deep water rescue operation, evacuation of stranded people, and deploying drones for surveillance and logistics support. The initiative focused on enhancing response capability and ensuring seamless coordination among all stakeholders during natural disaster
Lt Gen Neeraj Shukla, GOC, Gajraj Corps, directed the operational preparedness and praised the commitment of all individuals involved in the exercise.
Lt Gen Shukla highlighted a whole-of-society approach to disaster management and underlined the mantra of four Ps–Predict, Prepare, Protect and Provide- and the importance of ‘Jan Bhagidari’ or public participation in effective disaster response.
He addressed over 900 NCC cadets, encouraging them to be responsible leaders and active contributors to national development.
The demonstration witnessed participation from senior military officials, state authorities, CAPFs, and disaster response organisations, along with nearly 800 attendees, including NSS cadets and students from various institutions.
The exercise also helped to build public confidence by showcasing the Army’s readiness along with the other agencies to deal with crises. Going forward, participating organisation have committed to regular joint training, updating standard operating procedures and strengthening capacity-building measures, as reported by Indian news agency ANI.
The exercise witnessed integration of advanced technology, skilled personnel and coordinated planning.
