Just as one contingent of the Indian Army gets ready to conclude bilateral exercise Nomadic Elephant and return to India from Mongolia, a second contingent of the Indian Army reached the East Asian country on June 11 to take part in Khaan Quest 2025, a multinational military exercise scheduled from 14 to 28 June in Mongolia.
The 22nd edition, the Khaan Quest 2025 exercise, aims to build interoperability and readiness for United Nations peacekeeping missions under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
The Indian Army has described the exercise as a vital opportunity to enhance joint operational capabilities in a multinational setting.
What is Exercise Khaan Quest?
Khaan Quest is a multinational peacekeeping exercise held annually in Mongolia. It began in 2003 as a bilateral initiative between the Mongolian Armed Forces and the United States. From 2006, it expanded into a full-fledged multinational exercise.
The 2025 edition brings together military contingents from various countries to practice peace support operations and exchange best practices.
When was the previous edition held?
The last edition of Khaan Quest took place from 27 July to 9 August 2024, also in Mongolia.
How is the Indian Army participating this year?
The Indian Army contingent consists of 40 personnel, mainly from a battalion of the Kumaon Regiment, supported by troops from other arms and services. Significantly, the delegation also includes one woman officer and two women soldiers, highlighting the increasing role of women in peacekeeping missions.
What are the main objectives of the exercise?
The primary goal is to enhance the capabilities of participating armed forces in conducting peacekeeping operations under UN mandates. The exercise focuses on joint planning, high physical endurance, and integrated tactical drills in a simulated multinational environment.
What kind of drills will be carried out?
Troops will take part in a range of scenarios designed to replicate challenges in peacekeeping operations, including:
- Setting up static and mobile checkpoints
- Conducting cordon and search missions
- Patrolling and civilian evacuation from conflict zones
- Counter-IED (Improvised Explosive Device) procedures
- Combat first aid and casualty evacuation
Why is this exercise significant for India?
According to the Indian Army, participation in Khaan Quest helps improve the force’s preparedness for UN peacekeeping duties and builds mutual trust with other international contingents. It also enables Indian troops to exchange tactical knowledge and foster camaraderie with soldiers from different nations.
