A potentially catastrophic tragedy was averted in Assam’s Tinsukia district after Indian Army bomb disposal experts swiftly neutralised unexploded ordnance left behind following a pre-dawn militant attack by ULFA(I). The incident, which unfolded around 2:00 am on Sunday (March 22, 2026) near an Assam Police Commando camp in Jagun.
Suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) carried out a standoff attack targeting the police camp, injuring at least four Assam Police personnel. In a dangerous escalation, the attackers left behind unexploded ordnance, including Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) rounds and Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) munitions.
Swift Army action prevents casualties
Responding without delay, the Indian Army’s Red Shield Sappers, working in close coordination with Assam Rifles, rushed a specialised bomb disposal unit to the site. The area was quickly cordoned off and secured, with teams implementing strict safety protocols to prevent any accidental detonation.
In a high-risk operation, the explosives were carefully transported and neutralised at a controlled location away from habitation, effectively eliminating the threat. Officials highlighted that the entire operation was executed with exceptional precision, professionalism, and adherence to standard operating procedures.
The timely intervention not only secured the immediate area but also prevented what could have turned into a large-scale disaster involving civilian lives and property.
Counter-insurgency operations intensified
Following the attack, security forces have launched a joint Army-Police counter-insurgency operation to track down those responsible. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the incident, calling it “highly condemnable,” and assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
“The Army and the Police have launched a counter-insurgency operation. Those who have done this will certainly be nabbed,” he said during a visit to Haflong.
The Indian Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability and remaining vigilant against emerging threats, particularly in sensitive border and insurgency-prone areas.
