Highlighting the enduring relevance of one of India’s most iconic military commanders, senior Army officials on Sunday (April 12, 2026) described legendary warrior General Zorawar Singh as a “master of high-altitude warfare” whose legacy continues to guide modern mountain combat strategy.

Delivering the keynote address at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi Cantonment, Lieutenant General M P Singh, Colonel of the Regiment of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles & Ladakh Scouts, said the 19th-century warrior left behind a “model mountain warfare strategy” that remains unmatched.

“From conquering Ladakh to manoeuvering advancements into Baltistan and later launching his audacious campaigns in Tibet, time and again, Gen Zorawar Singh proved his knowledge of high terrain,” Lt Gen Singh said.

Why is Gen Zorawar Singh still relevant to the Indian Army?

Emphasising the strategic depth of his campaigns, Lt Gen Singh noted that Zorawar Singh’s operations across Ladakh, Baltistan and western Tibet demonstrated “strategic foresight, acumen and his high-altitude warfare genius.”

At a time when mountain warfare remains critical for India’s defence posture, particularly along its northern borders, the Army sees his legacy as both instructional and inspirational.

“His yet-to-match understanding of operational art [is] leaving us a model mountain warfare strategy in inheritance,” the senior officer underlined.

How did he redefine the Himalayas in military thinking?

According to Army officials, one of Gen Zorawar Singh’s greatest contributions was transforming the perception of the Himalayas, from a barrier into a battlefield advantage. “He transformed it to our strength,” Lt Gen Singh shared, adding that the legendary commander demonstrated that sustained operations in the world’s highest mountains are “not only possible, but achievable and sustainable.”

His life, the Army said, serves as a reminder that “the Himalayas are not our obstacle, but our greatest strength.”

What was the occasion and what new work was unveiled?

The remarks came during the unveiling of the book ‘Snow Lion: A Military Biography of General Zorawar Singh’ at the Manekshaw Centre. Authored by Lt Gen G S Katoch (retd), the book chronicles the general’s life, campaigns, operational tactics and leadership lessons. Lt Gen M P Singh said the book “bridges history with military insight” and will help “resurrect, relive and re-cultivate” the legacy of the legendary commander.

The publication is a result of the ‘Chair of Excellence’ established in Zorawar Singh’s honour by the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS).

How is the Army institutionalising Gen Zorawar’s legacy?

At a symposium held last year, the initiative was announced as a step towards deeper research into mountain warfare doctrines rooted in Indian military history.

A panel discussion led by the book’s author followed the unveiling, with military historians and senior officers reiterating Zorawar Singh’s reputation as a “courageous warrior with strategic brilliance and military genius.”
