The Indian Coast Guard on Thursday (June 26) inducted ‘Adamya’, the first of eight Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) being constructed under a major programme at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). The commissioning ceremony took place in Goa.
‘Adamya’ is the first ship in its class within the Indian Coast Guard fleet to feature Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs) and indigenously developed gearboxes. Controllable Pitch Propellers are a type of propeller where the angle (pitch) of the blades can be adjusted while the propeller is rotating.
These features provide enhanced manoeuvrability, greater operational flexibility, and improved performance at sea.
What systems and weapons is the vessel equipped with?
The FPV is equipped with a 30mm CRN-91 gun, two 12.7mm stabilised remote-control guns with fire control systems, an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and an Automated Power Management System (APMS).
‘Adamya’ will support a range of missions, including maritime law enforcement, coastal surveillance, search and rescue, and the protection of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The vessel’s capabilities are intended to improve responsiveness and precision across the Indian Coast Guard’s area of responsibility.
What is the significance of the vessel being built by GSL?
Designed and constructed entirely by Goa Shipyard Limited, ‘Adamya’ showcases India’s shipbuilding expertise and supports the government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). The induction of this vessel highlights growing domestic capabilities in defence manufacturing.
FPVs enable swift response to illegal activities such as smuggling and piracy, acting as force multipliers in the Indian Coast Guard fleet. They are also are equipped to conduct rapid search and rescue operations, providing timely assistance to distressed vessels and individuals at sea.
As the first in a planned series of eight FPVs, ‘Adamya’ will act as a force multiplier in the Coast Guard’s fleet. The vessel’s advanced systems and indigenously developed technologies will strengthen India’s coastal and maritime security infrastructure.
