The strategic partnership between India and the United States is poised for a major expansion, driven by economic complementarity, defence cooperation, and shared geopolitical interests, US Ambassador Sergio Gor has said.

In an interview with Span magazine, a US embassy publication, Gor underscored that India’s rapidly growing economy and vast infrastructure requirements align closely with American strengths in energy, aviation, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure.

This synergy, he noted, creates a “win-win” opportunity for both nations to deepen their economic engagement. “India’s growing economy and massive infrastructure needs align perfectly with American expertise,” Gor said.

He added that increased trade and investment could significantly strengthen the long-term strategic foundation of bilateral ties.

Focus on Supply Chains and ‘Pax Silica’

A key pillar of this expanding partnership is the joint effort to build resilient supply chains in critical sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and minerals.

Gor welcomed India’s recent entry into the Pax Silica Declaration, a US-led initiative aimed at securing critical mineral processing capacity and advancing artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The initiative comes at a time of intensifying global competition, particularly with China, over control of strategic resources and emerging technologies.

According to Gor, aligning economic and national security interests through such frameworks is essential for long-term stability.

He also highlighted the importance of the US-India COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology), launched after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump.

The initiative aims to drive transformative cooperation across defence, commerce, and technology sectors.

Defence Cooperation Remains Central

Gor described defence and security collaboration as the “most strategically significant” aspect of the bilateral relationship.

He pointed to enhanced military interoperability through joint exercises such as Exercise Malabar, Exercise Tiger Triumph, and Exercise Cope India.

Both nations are also key members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), alongside Japan and Australia, which aims to ensure a stable and secure Indo-Pacific region.

“Diplomacy, defence exercises, and military sales form the backbone of our defence cooperation,” Gor said, predicting a natural strengthening of ties if these elements continue to be prioritised.

Trade Deal as Regional Anchor

The ambassador emphasised that a proposed US-India trade agreement could serve as a “powerful anchor” for broader economic integration across South Asia.

He argued that Washington is uniquely positioned to act as a facilitator of growth in both South and Central Asia.

In Central Asia, countries like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are already engaging in significant investment deals with American firms in sectors such as energy, digital infrastructure, and critical minerals.

In South Asia, deeper economic ties with India are expected to drive regional connectivity and prosperity, reinforcing the broader strategic architecture.

Shared Values and Global Impact

Gor’s remarks come amid renewed efforts by New Delhi and Washington to stabilise ties following recent tensions over US tariff policies.

Without directly referencing specific disputes, he stressed that economic prosperity and security are closely linked, particularly in combating terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational crime.

Looking ahead, Gor expressed optimism that the partnership would deliver tangible benefits for citizens in both countries, from increased market access for American farmers to joint research breakthroughs in energy and healthcare.

“My vision is to transform the US-India relationship into the defining strategic partnership of the 21st century,” he said.

He concluded by noting that the relationship is rooted in shared democratic values, mutual prosperity, and common security interests, factors that will shape the global order for generations to come.
