In a landmark year marking 75 years of India-Germany diplomatic relations, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to Berlin has added fresh momentum to one of India’s most important partnerships in Europe. His Berlin visit follows Misri’s trip to Paris and the United States over the past few days.
During his trip to Berlin, the Foreign Secretary co-chaired the India-Germany Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) on Tuesday (April 14, 2026), with Dr. Géza Andreas von Geyr, State Secretary of the German Foreign Office. Both sides also launched the official logo commemorating 75 years of diplomatic ties, underlining the symbolic and strategic importance of the moment.
The India-Germany FOC consultations come just a year after both countries marked 25 years of their Strategic Partnership, reflecting a deepening and evolving relationship.
What were the key outcomes of the India-Germany talks?
The discussions focused on reviewing the entire spectrum of bilateral ties while identifying new areas for collaboration in a rapidly changing global landscape. Key areas discussed included trade and investment, defence and security cooperation, technology and innovation, green and sustainable development, along with mobility and people-to-people exchanges.
“The discussions provided an opportunity for both sides to take stock of the current status of bilateral relations and explore avenues for further deepening the India-Germany Strategic Partnership,” the MEA said in a statement, with both sides undertaking a comprehensive review of the full spectrum of bilateral relations.
Moreover, both sides agreed to further deepen cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, renewable energy, green hydrogen, digital governance, industrial collaboration, and development projects in third countries.
The consultations were described as being held in a “cordial and friendly atmosphere,” reflecting the strong foundation of the partnership.
Which global issues were discussed?
India and Germany also exchanged views on pressing international developments, including the West Asia situation, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict which has been going on for over four years now.
The discussions highlight growing alignment between New Delhi and Berlin on global security and geopolitical challenges.
Who did Vikram Misri meet during the visit?
During his Berlin trip, Misri also met German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, reinforcing high-level political engagement.
Foreign Minister Wadephul acknowledged the steady progress in the strategic partnership between India and Germany. Both sides agreed to expand and deepen cooperation in key areas and reaffirmed the importance of this vital relationship, the Indian Embassy in Berlin shared on social media.
In addition, he interacted with foreign policy experts, Members of Parliament, and senior officials from federal and state governments at the Körber Foundation, broadening the scope of dialogue beyond government channels.
How does this visit build on recent India-Germany engagement?
Misri’s visit follows German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January 2026, which had already injected fresh energy into bilateral ties.
The Berlin consultations are expected to pave the way for substantive outcomes at the next India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations later this year, a key mechanism driving the partnership.
Misri also extended an invitation to Dr. von Geyr to visit India, signalling continued high-level exchanges.
How does this fit into India’s broader global diplomacy?
Notably, the Berlin visit comes just days after Misri’s three-day trip to Washington, where he held talks with top US officials on defence, trade, and technology cooperation. The back-to-back engagements with the United States and Germany reflect India’s strategy to strengthen ties with major global powers across continents.
As India and Germany celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, the focus is clearly on future-ready collaboration, from green energy to advanced technologies.
