The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) inaugurated a new jetty at Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram, on Saturday (June 7, 2025), significantly enhancing the safe berthing and rapid deployment capabilities of its vessels in the region.

Director General S Paramesh officially opened the jetty, accompanied by Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander Coast Guard Region (West), during an official ceremony.

What are the key features of the new jetty?

The newly constructed jetty measures 76.70 metres long, 8 metres wide, and 4 to 6 metres deep, accommodating all current Coast Guard vessels stationed at Vizhinjam. Built by Thiruvananthapuram-based RTF Infra Pvt Ltd under the supervision of Kerala’s Harbour Engineering Department (HED), this infrastructure addresses the Coast Guard’s long-standing need for dedicated berthing facilities, previously reliant on commercial berths.

“The jetty is essential operational infrastructure, significantly boosting our preparedness and response to maritime emergencies,” said Director General Paramesh, highlighting its importance for search-and-rescue operations, medical evacuations, and coastal security.

How will the proposed air enclave enhance Coast Guard operations?

The inauguration coincides with progress on a proposed air enclave in Thiruvananthapuram, described by Director General Paramesh as a “work in progress.” Once operational, this enclave will permanently station helicopters in the region, dramatically improving rapid response capabilities. Fixed-wing aircraft can also operate from the enclave temporarily, further bolstering maritime surveillance and emergency response.

The increased Coast Guard presence is particularly crucial, given recent maritime incidents, such as the sinking of the Liberian-flagged container ship MSC Elsa, which underlines the necessity of swift response capabilities in southern Kerala.

Who attended the inauguration ceremony?

The event attracted representatives from Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL), Kerala Maritime Board, Port authorities, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Kerala State Police, Adani Ports Pvt Ltd, Fisheries Department, and delegates from the public and private sectors.

This new facility marks a significant advancement in India’s maritime defence infrastructure, enhancing strategic operations at Vizhinjam port.
