A lighter side of leadership was on display on Saturday as Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi tapped his feet along with the soldiers of the Assam Regiment on Friday (January 30, 2026). The Army Chief joined them in their traditional celebratory dance, lifting spirirts with his spontaneous gesture and drawing cheers, applause.
This happened after General Dwivedi felicitated the Indian Army Marching Contingents, Mounted Contingents and Military & Pipe Bands for their exemplary performances during the Republic Day 2026 Parade and the Beating Retreat Ceremony. He lauded the precision and unwavering professionalism of the participating contingents.
Notably, the Assam Regiment was honoured with the Best Marching Contingent Award.
‘Badlu Ram Ka Badan’ sets the rhythm
The Army Chief was seen matching steps with the soldiers as they danced to “Badlu Ram Ka Badan,” a much-loved regimental folk-style song. Known for its energetic beat and earthy lyrics, the tune has long been a staple of informal celebrations within the regiment, especially during moments of victory or unit bonding.
For generations of soldiers, the song has symbolised camaraderie, shared hardship and joy, reminding everyone that beyond ranks and insignia, the uniform binds all as one.
The upbeat tempo and rustic flavour of the song make it a favourite across eastern and northeastern regiments of the Indian Army. More than just music, it represents a culture where morale, tradition and togetherness are as vital as drills and discipline. COAS Dwivedi’s participation underlined that spirit.
Army marching contingents, bands awarded
The cheerful moment followed a more formal occasion a day earlier, when General Dwivedi felicitated Indian Army marching contingents, mounted units, and military and pipe bands for their stellar performances at the Republic Day 2026 Parade and the Beating Retreat Ceremony.
The awards recognised the precision, discipline and musical excellence displayed during the national celebrations that showcased the armed forces at their ceremonial best.
Assam Regiment marches ahead in popular vote
During the ceremony, results of the Popular Choice category, based on an online poll conducted via the MyGov portal, were also announced. The Assam Regiment emerged as the Best Marching Contingent among the three armed services, reaffirming its reputation for sharp drill and regimental pride.
Among the Central Armed Police Forces and auxiliary units, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) topped the charts, earning widespread public appreciation.
