The Indian Ministry of Defence has identified an Indian firm to establish a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility for the S-400 air defence system in India. This decision follows the success of the S-400 systems during Operation Sindoor and is expected to enhance the operational readiness of India’s air defence capabilities.

The facility will ensure India’s self-reliance in maintaining these advanced defence systems and reduce dependence on foreign support. The collaboration with Russia’s Almaz-Antey, the manufacturer of the S-400, marks a significant step in strengthening India-Russia military cooperation, The Hindu reported.

What role did the S-400 play during Operation Sindoor?

The S-400 air defence system, officially named ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ in Indian service, played a crucial role in countering threats during Operation Sindoor. In May, the S-400 intercepted and neutralised Pakistani drones and missiles targeting over 15 Indian cities, including military installations, in retaliation for the Indian operation against terror camps in Pakistan.

The successful performance of the system during this operation accelerated plans to establish a maintenance facility in India, ensuring the operational readiness of the air defence units.

What is the significance of the maintenance facility for India’s defence capabilities?

The establishment of an MRO facility for the S-400 is seen as a landmark achievement in India’s military self-reliance efforts. It aligns with the government’s ‘Make In India’ initiative and will allow India to maintain and service these advanced air defence systems locally.

This development also addresses challenges posed by international sanctions and potential supply chain disruptions, ensuring that India is less reliant on foreign support for the upkeep of critical defence equipment.

What is the status of India’s S-400 missile systems?

India has ordered five S-400 missile systems from Russia, with three systems already delivered and deployed. The remaining two systems are expected to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.

The S-400 has a range of up to 400 kilometres and is considered one of the most advanced air defence systems globally, capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously at long ranges.
