DRDO Successfully Completes Akash-NG Missile Trials, Clearing Path for Induction into Indian Air Force

India has taken a major step forward in strengthening its air defence shield with the successful completion of user evaluation trials of the Next Generation Akash (Akash-NG) missile system by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The milestone clears the way for the induction of the advanced surface-to-air missile system into the Indian armed forces, significantly boosting the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) operational readiness.
What happened during the Akash-NG user trials?
During the trials, Akash-NG missiles demonstrated high accuracy and reliability by intercepting aerial targets across a wide spectrum of range and altitude profiles.
The system successfully engaged threats in near-boundary and low-altitude scenarios, as well as long-range and high-altitude conditions, underscoring its versatility against diverse aerial threats.
How is Akash-NG a technological leap?
The Akash-NG represents a substantial technological leap over earlier variants. It is equipped with an indigenously developed Radio Frequency (RF) seeker and powered by a solid rocket motor, enabling faster reaction times and improved engagement capability against modern aircraft, drones and other airborne threats.
All major subsystems of the Akash-NG, including the Multi-Function Radar (MFR), Command and Control Unit, and Missile Launch Vehicle (MLV), have been developed by DRDO laboratories in close collaboration with Indian industry partners, reinforcing the government’s push for defence indigenisation.
Who were the witness to the user trials of Akash-NG?
The trials were witnessed by senior DRDO scientists and user representatives from the IAF.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the IAF and industry partners, stating that the state-of-the-art Akash-NG will significantly enhance India’s air defence capabilities.
DRDO Chairman and Department of Defence R&D Secretary Dr Samir V Kamat said the successful trials pave the way for the system’s induction into service.
