India observed Vijay Diwas on December 16, commemorating its decisive victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war that resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. The day marks one of the most consequential moments in India’s military history and honours the courage, sacrifice, and resolve of the Indian armed forces during the 13-day conflict.

This year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) marked the occasion by sharing rare archival footage from the 1971 war. The visuals revisited key moments from the conflict and underlined how India’s military action reshaped both history and geography in South Asia.

What did the Indian Air Force share on Vijay Diwas?

The Indian Air Force released a video titled ‘1971 War… Chronicle of Courage’, recalling its role during the conflict. The footage showcased combat aircraft operations during the war, including visuals linked to the Battle of Longewala and the “race to Dacca”.

The video documented milestones from the conflict at a time when India did not possess advanced weapon systems. The closing message in the clip described the period as “not just days of war, but moments of courage, sacrifice and resolve”.

Why is December 16 significant in the 1971 war?

December 16 marks the formal end of the 1971 India–Pakistan war. On that day, Lieutenant General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi surrendered to Indian forces in Dhaka, handing over his epaulets and revolver.

The surrender led to the capitulation of Pakistani troops in East Pakistan. Dhaka witnessed public celebrations as power was formally transferred to the newly formed Government of Bangladesh, bringing the conflict to a close.

How else did the Indian Air Force commemorate Vijay Diwas this year?

The Indian Air Force marked Vijay Diwas with a commemorative aerial display at Air Force Station Mohanbari in Dibrugarh. The event was organised by the Headquarters Eastern Air Command and was attended by military and civil dignitaries, air veterans, and schoolchildren.

Addressing the media at the airbase, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh said India remains prepared to deal with any two-front conflict. He stated that the Indian Air Force is ready to respond decisively to any provocation and warned that any misadventure by adversaries would be met with a strong response.

Vijay Diwas continues to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the 1971 war and the enduring legacy of that victory for India and the region.
