The Indian Army has completed the induction of its Apache AH-64E attack helicopter fleet with the arrival of the final three aircraft, significantly enhancing its combat strike and reconnaissance capabilities, particularly in the western and desert sectors.

With this delivery, the Army Aviation Corps now has all six Apaches ordered for operational deployment, a milestone officials say will substantially strengthen battlefield preparedness.

Where will the new Apaches be stationed, and why?

The newly arrived helicopters were flown into India aboard a heavy-lift Antonov An-124 aircraft and will be based in Jodhpur after assembly, joint inspections, and mandatory technical clearances.

They will be inducted into the Army’s 451 Army Aviation Squadron, which is tasked with supporting operations in challenging terrain along India’s western front.

Why were there delays in Apache deliveries?

The completion of deliveries marks the end of a phased induction process that saw multiple delays. While initial timelines had indicated that Apache deliveries to the Army would begin in 2023, schedules were pushed to 2024 and then further delayed.

The first batch of three helicopters eventually arrived in July this year, with the remaining aircraft delivered this week. Despite these setbacks, the Army had formally inducted the platform after the first batch, signalling its intent to fast-track operational readiness.

How lethal are the Apache gunships?

The Apache AH-64E, one of the world’s most advanced attack helicopters, is equipped with precision-guided munitions, advanced sensors, and night-fighting capabilities, making it a force multiplier for both offensive and defensive missions.

Its induction is seen as a critical step in building a dedicated attack helicopter capability within the Army, independent of the Indian Air Force.

Has the Indian Army showcased the Apache capabilities before?

The helicopters have already demonstrated their operational value. Earlier this year, Army Apaches made their combat debut during Exercise Maru Jwala, part of the larger tri-services Exercise Trishul, showcasing joint warfighting and reconnaissance roles.

The Indian Army described the induction as a “milestone moment,” noting that the Apache fleet will significantly bolster the Army Aviation Corps’ strike and surveillance capabilities amid evolving security challenges
