Two soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), were killed and another was injured during a fierce encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday (September 8, 2025). Earlier in the day, security forces gunned down two terrorists during Operation Guddar.

This is the second major encounter in Kulgam in the last five weeks. In August, a prolonged 11-day operation in the Akhal forest saw two Army personnel killed and 10 others injured, with limited success in eliminating terrorists. Prior to that, security forces had gunned down a few more terrorists during Op ShivShakti and Op Madadev.

Who were the soldiers killed in action?

The Army identified the fallen soldiers as Subedar Perbhat Gaur and Lance Naik Narender Sindhu. Both belonged to the elite paratroopers unit and were part of the joint operation conducted by the Army, J&K Police and the CRPF.

Paying tribute, the Chinar Corps posted on X, “Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of the Bravehearts, Sub Perbhat Gaur and L/Nk Narender Sindhu, in line of duty for the Nation. Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us. Indian Army expresses deepest condolences and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families. Operation continues.”

Operation Guddar: How did the encounter begin?

According to the Army and police, the operation was launched early morning in the Guddar forest area following intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists. The initial gunbattle broke out in an orchard, where one local terrorist was killed. As the fighting moved deeper into the forest, a JCO sustained injuries, followed by the death of another terrorist and injury of one more soldier.

Who were the terrorists killed?

The Army said one of the slain terrorists was a local recruit, while the second is suspected to be a foreign militant. Their identities are yet to be officially confirmed.
