The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) has witnessed a historic development with the successful trial of the first exclusive Indian Army freight train. The train ran from BD Bari to Anantnag between September12–13, 2025 and carried 753 metric tonnes of Advance Winter Stocking (AWS).

For decades, the Indian Army has relied heavily on road convoys to move essential supplies before mountain passes close due to snow. The freight train marks a turning point in the AWS modus operandi, enhancing speed, safety, and reliability of logistics. This move strengthens operational readiness and reduces vulnerabilities in the Himalayan terrain.

“Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) witnessed a historic milestone with the successful run of Freight Train the first exclusive freight train of the Indian Army, from BD Bari to Anantnag on 12–13 September,” the ministry said in a statement.

How does the initiative reflect military–civil fusion in logistics?

In a unique demonstration of dual-use logistics, the return journey of the freight rake will carry Kashmiri apples to markets across India. This not only optimizes Army resources but also ensures that local farmers, who are often cut off due to landslides and road closures, gain direct access to national markets.

The initiative provides them with both economic relief and livelihood security.

What does this mean for the people of Kashmir?

The freight train is more than a military supply chain upgrade as it is also a nation-building measure. By enabling farmers to bypass disrupted road routes, the Army is helping safeguard the Valley’s agricultural economy. Seamless transport of apples, one of Kashmir’s key cash crops, ensures that local communities benefit alongside the Army.

The Army’s use of the USBRL reflects a broader capability development strategy, leveraging modern infrastructure for both defence and civilian needs. By harnessing rail mobility, the Army reduces its logistical risks while simultaneously boosting connectivity, resilience, and prosperity in the region.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier in June this year inaugurated the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, which connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India by a railway link. The bridge, towering 359 metres above the riverbed, stands as the world’s highest railway arch bridge.
