United Nations General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Tuesday (April 28, 2026), holding discussions on UN80, the Sustainable Development Goals, artificial intelligence, and the West Asia conflict.

Jaishankar, in a post on X, said he underscored the need for reformed multilateralism reflective of today’s realities, particularly of the Global South, and thanked Baerbock for her leadership and contributions at the UN.

Speaking at a press briefing at UN House, Baerbock called for strengthened global cooperation, warning that the United Nations, multilateralism, and international law were not only under pressure but under direct attack.

She lauded India’s role at the UN, noting that more than 184 Indian peacekeepers had made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of global peace, and praised India’s contributions through the Indian-UN Development Partnership Fund to support least developed countries in achieving the SDGs.

Baerbock had earlier commenced her visit by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. She also held an interactive session with representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and IT on the governance and regulation of Artificial Intelligence.

This is the second high-level UN visit to India this year, following Secretary-General António Guterres’ attendance at the AI Impact Summit in February. Baerbock is scheduled to travel to China on April 29–30 for further bilateral engagements.

Baerbock, responding to a question on Trump’s Board of Peace, pushed back sharply. “You will not find just peace for anybody in the world if you have to pay the fee to join it,” she said, adding that “every country, no matter how big or small, how powerful or rich, has a seat at the table” at the UN.

Calling for renewed commitment to the UN Charter, Baerbock warned that “the United Nations, multilateralism, and international law are not only under pressure but under direct attack,” stressing that no country can address today’s interconnected global challenges alone.
