The European Union has sent a strong message to the United States on fulfilling its existing trade commitments, warning that a renewed tariff war by President Donald Trump could strain the transatlantic economic relations.

“A deal is a deal,” an EU representative told the US, underscoring the prerequisite for predictability and mutual trust in global trade, shunning the tariff-related uncertainties being unleashed by Trump.

Speaking on behalf of the EU, senior officials from the European Commission noted that agreements reached between Brussels and Washington must be honoured in full.

The strong remarks from the EU came amidst Trump’s bid to impose a blanket 15% tariff on all global trade with the US, after a ruling by the United States Supreme Court that termed the earlier tariffs imposed by the US President as bad in law.

The renewed tariff war by Trump could adversely affect the US trade with EU, particularly in the sectors such as steel, aluminium, and green technology, it is feared by the bloc.

EU policymakers indicated that any unilateral move by Trump would be met with a proportionate response, as the EU-US trade is one of the largest globally covering goods, services, and investments worth hundreds of billions of Euros annually.

EU officials have argued that stability was a requirement if businesses and global supply chains do not come under undue pressure from geopolitics.

While both sides are still negotiating an amicable solution to the tariff war, the EU reiterated that it preferred dialogue over retaliation to Trump’s tariff moves.

However, the officials clearly stated that they expected the US to fulfill its trade commitments previously agreed upon to avoid escalating the tariff war inflicted by Trump.

The latest EU remarks on the tariff imposed by Trump represents the persistent sensitivities in the transatlantic trade policy, as both the European bloc and the US seek closer ties in strategic sectors and economic stability.
