In a seismic shift for West Asian geopolitics, the Iranian Embassy in India has issued a formal call for global intervention following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The mission’s statement, released Sunday (March 1, 2026), marks a point of no return in the escalating conflict.
Following the Khamenei’s killing, Tehran has demanded an international “condemnation of lawlessness” while its military wings begin a massive, multi-front retaliation.
A nation in mourning: The fallout of ‘Operation Epic Fury’
The killing of Khamenei, the 86-year-old cleric who steered Iran for nearly four decades, was confirmed early Sunday (March 1, 2026) following a devastating joint military operation by the United States and Israel. In New Delhi, the Iranian national flag was lowered to half-mast as the embassy expressed “profound sorrow and grief” over the loss of the leader.
The mission’s statement was a blistering indictment of the Western alliance, framing the strike as a “blatant crime” and an “unforgivable” act of aggression. “Independent and freedom-seeking governments must not remain silent,” the embassy urged, warning that the US and Israel must now “endure the grave consequences.”
“The embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India calls upon independent and freedom-seeking governments around the world to strongly condemn this blatant crime and to refrain from remaining silent in the face of lawlessness and aggression,” the Iranian mission said.
It added that the sacrifice of the “martyrs will only strengthen the resolve of the Iranian people in defending their independence, dignity, and lofty ideals.”
Iran’s IRGC vows to strike back
The rhetoric from the embassy was backed by immediate kinetic action on the ground. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has already declared the commencement of “Operation Truthful Promise 4,” a retaliatory campaign targeting American and Israeli interests across the region.
Targetting US bases in the region, the IRGC confirmed it has launched waves of ballistic missiles and drones at US military installations, including the 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and bases in Qatar and the UAE.
The Revolutionary Guard, in a statement, said that in the first phase of the operation, named “Truthful Promise 4,” Iran’s military struck the command of the US 5th Fleet in Bahrain, as well as US bases in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and military targets in Israel. However, the extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
Regional turmoil intensifies
Reports of explosions have surfaced near Dubai and Doha, while Israeli air defenses were active overnight as Tehran attempted to strike deep within the “Zionist regime.”
While the US has confirmed the first American service member deaths of the campaign, Iran claims to have struck the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf, a claim currently under review by the Pentagon.
Khamenei’s assassination occurs against a backdrop of a “pre-emptive” war launched by the Trump administration and the Netanyahu government, aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear program and forcing “regime change.” Dubbed ‘Operation Epic Fury’ by Washington and ‘Operation Genesis’ by Tel Aviv, the campaign has seen the largest aerial sorties in the history of the Israeli Air Force.
Despite the loss of its top leader, the Iranian mission in India maintained a posture of defiance. “The proud nation of Iran will continue its noble path with strength and resilience,” the statement read, adding that the “martyrdom” of its leaders would only serve to harden the resolve of the Iranian people.
