Mahendragiri (Yard 12654), the sixth ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) and the fourth built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL), was delivered to the Indian Navy on Thursday (April 30, 2026), in Mumbai. The delivery marks a significant milestone in achieving self-reliance in warship design and construction, reinforcing India’s push towards Aatmanirbharta in defence.

It is also the sixth Project 17A frigate to be delivered in less than 17 months since the first ship, INS Nilgiri, was handed over in December 2024. Project 17A frigates are described as versatile multi-mission platforms designed to address current and emerging maritime challenges.

INS Mahendragiri delivery: What makes Project 17A frigates a ‘quantum leap’?

This class represents a “quantum leap” in naval design, combining advanced stealth features, enhanced firepower, high levels of automation and improved survivability. Designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai, these ships mark a generational advancement over the earlier Shivalik-class (P17) frigates.

Mahendragiri is equipped with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, integrating a diesel engine and a gas turbine. These drive a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) on each shaft, allowing flexibility in speed and fuel efficiency.

The ship also features a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), which enhances operational efficiency through automation and centralised control of onboard systems.

What combat capabilities does the frigate bring?

The warship is fitted with an advanced suite of weapons and sensors, making it capable across multiple domains of naval warfare. Its systems cover anti-surface warfare (targeting enemy ships), anti-air warfare (defending against aerial threats), anti-submarine warfare (detecting and neutralising underwater threats).

This multi-layered capability ensures that the frigate can operate effectively in diverse mission scenarios—from high-intensity combat to maritime security operations.

Nilgiri-class ships come packed with a mighty punch and are armed with different types of weapons systems. Their primary offensive weapon are 8 Brahmos supersonic anti-ship missiles, which had proved their worth during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, when they were fired with deadly effect at different Pakistani airbases.

How does INS Mahendragiri enhance the Indian Navy’s operational readiness?

As a multi-mission stealth frigate, Mahendragiri strengthens the Navy’s ability to operate across the Indian Ocean Region and beyond. Its improved stealth features reduce detectability, while its advanced sensors and weapons enhance situational awareness and response capability.

Together, these capabilities contribute to greater maritime dominance, protection of sea lanes, and enhanced deterrence.

With an indigenous content of approximately 75%, Project 17A is a major step forward in domestic warship building. The programme has involved over 200 MSMEs and generated employment for around 4,000 personnel directly and more than 10,000 indirectly.

INS Mahendragiri’s delivery underscores the Indian Navy’s focus on modernisation, indigenisation and readiness to meet evolving maritime challenges.
