A series of bomb blasts, gunfire, and arson attacks erupted across Dhaka on Tuesday (November 11) in the lead-up to major political demonstrations planned for next week in Bangladesh’s capital.
Reports by local Bangladeshi news outlets hint at continuing acts of violence and arson while political parties call their supporters to take to the streets as the election date draws closer.
According to a recent report by Dhaka Tribune, on the intervening night on November 10-11, 2025, “miscreants” set three buses and a private car parked in different areas of Dhaka ablaze. Prior to that, on Monday (November 10, 2025) morning, two buses had caught fire in Merul Badda and Shahjadpur.
The violence coincides with calls to action sounded by major political parties in Bangladesh. This month, major political parties including Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami have taken to the streets frequently as the election announced by Yunus administraton is fast approaching.
Following the toppling of the Awami League government in August 2024, BNP and Jamaat have often been seen on opposing sides on several issues, including reforms. Jamaat and eight other Islamist-leaning parties have announced a rally in Dhaka today— 11 November, 2025. Their primary demands concern an order to implement the July National Charter and holding a referendum on it within November. The party also wants a PR (proportional representation) system to be introduced in both houses, or at least in the upper house, in the upcoming national elections, according to a report in Prothom Alo.
The banned Awami League, meanwhile, used online channels to declare that it will carry out a “Dhaka lockdown” programme on 13 November. It is important to note that the verdict date for the trial for three accused, including ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, for crimes against humanity committed during the July popular uprising, has been set for 13 November.
