Reaffirming the ethos of Indian Armed Forces, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, along with his wife Mrs Sunita Dwivedi, pledged to donate their organs after their death on Wednesday (August 20). He also urged personnel and their families to come forward for organ donation.

Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) and his wife, who is the President AWWA, have taken a pledge to give their organs at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), giving a significant boost to the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA). Inspiring the Armed Forces community to lead in organ donation is the aim of AORTA initiative.

General Dwivedi described organ donation as a service to humanity and an extension of the Armed Forces’ spirit of sacrifice and courage. Saying so, he also requested service personnel and their families to set an example for society. The COAS also lauded AORTA for its consistent efforts in spreading awareness.

What Army Chief said on organ donation?

After his pledge, Gen Dwivedi underlined that India is known for nearly 20,000 organ transplants per year, ranking second after the United States. “The duty of the army is to prioritise the welfare of the country and the society and organ donation is one of the ways of this duty,” he said.

If we move forward in this direction, it will be a message to society that a true soldier stands for the service of humanity, even after death, the COAS noted

During the event, the Army Chief also presented on-the-spot Chiefs Recommendation Cards to three frontline staff engaged in organ transplant care, in view of the vital role of healthcare workers. The staff included a housekeeper who diligently maintained hygiene and sanitation for patients.

AORTA has emerged as a national leader in organ retrieval and transplant efforts. Worth mentioning here is that the Indian Army has already created a record, with more than 26,000 personnel pledging organ donations in a single campaign.
