Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi recently visited forward posts in the strategically crucial central sector, covering high-altitude areas of Pithoragarh and nearby forward locations. The visit aimed to assess the operational posture, boost troop morale and reinforce civil-military cooperation in terrain bordering China and Nepal.

During briefings by field commanders, the Indian Army chief examined multiple ongoing capability enhancements, including advanced surveillance and monitoring systems, specialist mobility platforms for high-altitude movement, integration of next-generation battlefield technologies, optimised reconnaissance and intelligence assets, along with coordination with CAPF and allied security agencies.

General Dwivedi commended troops for their tactical agility, discipline and innovative use of new equipment in rugged terrain.

How did he engage with troops on the ground?

Meeting personnel deployed in remote, climatically harsh locations, the Army Chief lauded their courage, endurance and dedication. He reiterated the Army’s ethos of “Service Before Self” and assured full preparedness to tackle any emerging threat.

COAS General Dwivedi also conveyed Diwali greetings to soldiers and their families, acknowledging their commitment to duty despite festive season separations.

What emphasis was placed on the Kumaon region?

Highlighting the region’s geostrategic relevance as a frontier facing China and Nepal, General Dwivedi praised the patriotism and resilience of local communities. He paid homage to the legacy of the Kumaon Regiment, renowned for its valour and sacrifices.

During his visit to the Panchshul Brigade at Pitthoragarh, the COAS also appreciated the formation’s adoption of geothermal energy solutions and other green initiatives, enhancing sustainable defence. The brigade was praised for the innovative use of underground storage for water and fuel to ensure sustainability during harsh winters.

What civil outreach initiatives were assessed?

Additionally, the Army Chief reviewed progress under Operation Sadbhavna and the Vibrant Village Programme, focusing on tent-based homestays in Garbyang and Kalapani, road connectivity projects, renewable hybrid power systems, medical outreach camps, agricultural support through polyhouses.

General Dwivedi stressed that the Indian Army in the region stands for “strength with compassion,” simultaneously guarding borders and uplifting communities. Concluding his visit, the COAS reaffirmed the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence in high-altitude sectors, strengthening civil-military bonds.

He underscored that border defence and community empowerment will continue in tandem in this strategically sensitive sector.

Veteran Achievers Award

General Dwivedi also felicitated three distinguished veterans with the ‘Veteran Achievers Award’ for their outstanding contributions to society post-retirement. Those awarded were Major Lalit Kumar Singh (Retd), Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Devi Chand (Retd), and Naik Lalit Mohan (Retd).
