India’s state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will open a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Missamari in Assam to support the Indian Army’s helicopter operations in the Northeastern region, as the force held a counter-drone training capsule for security agencies ahead of the Republic Day.
The MRO hub’s foundation stone laying was done on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) by the Indian Army’s General Officer Commanding of Gajraj Corps in the presence of HAL Helicopter Complex’s Chief Executive Officer P. B. Rangarao, according to the Ministry of Defence.
The Army GOC and HAL CEO also interacted, focusing on enhancing the army helicopters’ serviceability by strengthening the MRO capabilities so that these flying machines are available for more operations and response to military requirements.
How would the MRO hub aid in military operations?
The upcoming MRO facility would reduce turn-around time of the Army helicopters going into MRO, streamline logistics support operations of the army, and provide sustained support to Army Aviation and the Indian Air Force units.
The MRO Hub would enhance combat readiness in the region and mark a major milestone in strengthening indigenous aerospace support infrastructure, the MoD official said. The MRO plan aligns with the Indian government’s self-reliance goals for the military.
Why was the counter-drone capsule held?
The training capsule at Tinsukia for the police, paramilitary, and security forces was to enable them to secure the Indian skies before, during, and after the Republic Day on January 26.
The Army’s Red Shield Gunners under the Spear Corps held the preparatory training for personnel from the Assam Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and Indian Oil Corporation Limited staffers.
What did the training achieve?
The capsule enhanced awareness, response mechanisms, and coordination among participating agencies to address the evolving challenges posed by drone misuse, according to the Ministry of Defence.
It comprised practical demonstrations and structured interactions, enabling participants to develop a common understanding of procedures and response protocols, the MoD said.
“The exercise significantly enhanced operational readiness and inter-agency coordination, thereby strengthening collective security preparedness through a whole-of-nation approach,” it added.
