The Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi visited his alma mater, Sainik School Rewa, on Tuesday (April 28, 2026), with what the Indian Army described as a “homecoming.”

In a post, the Army shared the emotional significance of the visit, noting that it marked a return to the institution “where his journey of discipline, courage and leadership first began.”

During the visit, the Army Chief paid homage at the school memorial and inspected a guard of honour presented by cadets. He later interacted with students and faculty, encouraging cadets to uphold the values of discipline, integrity, and commitment to national services.

“Walking once again through the corridors that shaped his character, the COAS shared his memories and inspired young cadets to lead with integrity, serve with dedication, and uphold an unwavering commitment to the nation,” the post said.

General Dwivedi also praised the faculty and cadets for maintaining the traditions of the institution, highlighting that Sainik Schools remain instrumental in shaping the future military leaders by nurturing and preparing youth for leadership roles in the armed forces.

Calling the visit a tribute to mentorship and legacy, the Army emphasised that the occasion reflected the enduring contribution of such institutions in building the foundation of India’s officer cadre.

The visit comes days after General Dwivedi was inducted into the International Hall of Fame at the Army War College in the United States. He is the third Indian Army Chief to receive the honour after General V K Singh and General Bikram Singh.

Interestingly, General Dwivedi, a commissioned Infantry officer since December 1984 and the 29th Army Chief from June 30, 2024, shares a remarkable connection with the current Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, who was his batchmate at Sainik School Rewa, both having passed out from the institution in 1981.

Sainik Schools began as feeder institutes for the National Defence Academy and the Naval Academy in 1961.
