In a landmark reform aimed at strengthening operational readiness, the Indian Army has unveiled a new fitness framework that makes physical tests mandatory for all its 13 lakh personnel, from Agniveers to Generals.

The new system, called the Combined Physical Test (CPT), merges the existing Battle Physical Efficiency Test (BPET) and Physical Proficiency Test (PPT) into a single, comprehensive evaluation.

When does the Combined Physical Test come into force?

According to media reports, the CPT reflects the Army’s evolving operational demands and the realities of modern warfare. The test will come into force from April 1, 2026, with preparatory exercises beginning across units on October 15 this year.

The exercise will be conducted twice a year and will apply to all ranks up to 60 years of age, including Lieutenant Generals, who retire at that age.

Currently, the BPET is held only up to 45 years, and the PPT up to 50 years. The CPT will now standardise physical assessments across the Army, introducing a rank-neutral and gender-neutral benchmark.

It will also be terrain and climate-sensitive, with relaxed standards for units operating above 9,000 feet in high-altitude regions.

What will constitute the Combined Physical Test?

The test components include a 3.2 km run, push-ups, and sit-ups, with younger soldiers required to demonstrate additional abilities such as vertical rope climbing.

The results will be graded on a four-tier scale — super excellent, excellent, good, and satisfactory — and will directly influence officers’ Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs), thereby affecting career progression.

For the first time, a ‘Unit Operational Efficiency Test’ has been introduced, requiring entire units to undertake route marches designed to enhance collective endurance and battlefield coordination.

How were the CPT standards finalised?

Developed through extensive data analysis and benchmarking against ‘Khelo India’ and global military fitness standards, the CPT was finalised with key inputs from the Army Training Command and the Adjutant General’s Branch.

Officials said the initiative aims to create a realistic, inclusive, and standardised testing regime, reaffirming that even in an era of advanced technology, physical endurance, agility, and mental resilience remain at the heart of combat readiness.
