The Indian Army on Monday (September 1, 2025) morning thwarted an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Mendhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. According to officials, alert troops detected movement of a group of terrorists near Dabbi village in the Forward Balakote area around 5:30 am.

Infiltration attempt coincided with the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the winter capital Jammu to take note of the situation in the aftermath of the heavy rain and flash floods that left a trail of death and destruction last month.

What happened in Mendhar sector?

Heavy gunfire ensued as the infiltrators tried to sneak in from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). After an intense initial exchange, intermittent firing continued for hours. While there have been no confirmed reports of casualties so far, the area has been sealed off and a massive search operation is underway.

How did the Army respond?

Nagrota-based White Knight Corps confirmed the incident on X, noting that “fire was immediately opened by alert troops preventing the infiltration attempt.” It added that forces have been repositioned to maintain foolproof domination of the area, with a high state of alert continuing along the LoC.

Why are infiltration bids on the rise?

The latest attempt adds to a series of infiltration efforts in recent weeks. Last month, security forces foiled a major bid in the Uri sector of Baramulla, eliminating two armed infiltrators. In Kupwara, another attempt was detected and neutralized after a fierce gunfight near the Keran sector.

Officials say Pakistan-based groups are trying to push more militants across before the onset of winter, when snow blocks mountain passes.

What does this mean for security in J&K?

The foiled Mendhar infiltration highlights the sustained challenges along the LoC, where security forces have heightened surveillance using drones, ground sensors, and intensified patrols. Officials stress that infiltration attempts will be met with “prompt and effective” counter-action, ensuring that border domination remains uncompromised.
