India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi had a phone call on Thursday (March 12, 2026) when Tehran asked for BRICS to play an important role in international security and stability.

Jaishankar, after his talks with Araghchi, tweeted that he “Had another conversation with Iranian FM @araghchi yesterday night.”

In the X post on Friday (March 13), he mentioned, without any other details, that they “discussed bilateral matters as also BRICS related issues.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry, too, posted on the social media platform after Araghchi’s conversation with Jaishankar.

That post mentioned that Araghchi highlighted the importance and position of BRICS as a forum for developing multilateral cooperation.

Araghchi, the post said, deemed it essential for the institution (BRICS) to play a constructive role at the current juncture in supporting regional and global stability and security.

It said the two leaders discussed regional and international developments, and the regional fallout from the US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, about which the Foreign Ministry called “aggression.”

Araghchi briefed the Indian minister on the latest situation resulting from the “acts of aggression and atrocities committed” by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran.

He also talked about the US-Israel attack’s consequences for regional and global stability and security.

Emphasising the firm resolve of the Iranian government, nation, and armed forces to exercise their legitimate right to self-defense against the aggressors, the Iranian Foreign Minister stressed the necessity for regional and international bodies and organizations to condemn the military aggression against Iran.

However, both the Indian and Iranian social media posts never mentioned anything about Iran asking India, as the next BRICS chair, to condemn the February 28 US-Israel airstrikes on Iran that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

During the call, Jaishankar expressed India’s readiness to expand bilateral and multilateral cooperation within regional and international forums, the Iranian post said.

He also emphasised the importance of finding a path to strengthen sustainable stability and security in the region as a collective necessity, it added.

Both the leaders had previously spoken thrice in the last two weeks on the West Asian war and safe passage for Indian cargo vessels through the Hormuz Strait, on February 28, March 5, and March 10, following which Iran agreed to allow maritime traffic bound for India.
