Reaffirming its reputation as a reliable humanitarian partner and first responder during disasters, India has dispatched 30 tonnes of relief supplies to Madagascar after the island nation was devastated by powerful tropical cyclones earlier this year. Madagascar is the largest and most populous island in the Indian Ocean.
An Indian Air Force C-17 strategic transport aircraft carrying medical aid and emergency relief material landed in Antananarivo, delivering critical assistance to communities affected by Tropical Cyclones Fytia and Geza, highlighting India’s growing role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR).
India has constantly and consistent supported partner countries during times of crisis, be it Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and now Madagascar.
India steps in after cyclones devastate Madagascar
Madagascar has been grappling with widespread destruction caused by the twin cyclones, which damaged homes, disrupted infrastructure and affected thousands of people across several regions. Responding to the crisis, India dispatched 30 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, aimed at helping local authorities and aid agencies support affected communities.
The shipment included 12 tonnes of medical aid, 18 tonnes of disaster relief material. The supplies were transported by the Indian Air Force’s heavy-lift C-17 aircraft, one of India’s key assets for rapid global humanitarian operations.
What India’s relief package includes
The humanitarian consignment contains essential supplies designed to address urgent health and survival needs in disaster-hit areas. Among the items delivered were life-saving medicines, surgical supplies, emergency tents, water storage tanks, dignity kits, ready-to-eat meals.
These materials are expected to provide immediate support to displaced families and vulnerable communities struggling in the aftermath of the storms.
India’s message of solidarity with Madagascar
Ministry of External Affairs said the mission reflects the country’s strong commitment to standing with partner nations during emergencies.
“India stands in solidarity with the people of Madagascar. Following the widespread devastation caused by Tropical Cyclones Fytia and Geza earlier this year, India dispatched humanitarian assistance to support ongoing relief efforts,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
He added that the supplies are meant to provide critical support to communities affected by the disaster.
India’s expanding role in global disaster relief
The latest mission underscores India’s increasing prominence in humanitarian diplomacy and disaster response operations worldwide. Over the years, New Delhi has carried out numerous HADR missions to assist countries affected by cyclones, earthquakes, floods, health emergencies, humanitarian crises.
India has previously provided relief to nations across South Asia, the Indian Ocean region, Africa and the Pacific, often deploying military aircraft and naval vessels for rapid response operations.
A key partner for Indian Ocean nations
Madagascar, located in the southwestern Indian Ocean, is frequently vulnerable to extreme weather events such as cyclones and flooding. For many island nations in the region, international humanitarian assistance plays a crucial role in emergency recovery efforts.
India has been strengthening its engagement with Indian Ocean countries through initiatives focused on disaster relief, development partnerships and maritime cooperation, aligned with its SAGAR doctrine — Security and Growth for All in the Region.
