Seems like there could finally be peace deal between Russia and Ukraine after 3 years of continuous fighting. As the deadline for Russia-Ukraine ceasefire inches closer, multiple signs suggest that this could finally be achieved. US President Donald Trump had set a deadline of August 8 for Moscow to reach a peace deal with Kyiv.

Russia and Ukraine have been engaged in a deadly war since February 2022 when Vladimir Putin’s army launched a full-scale invasion of Kyiv. US President Trump made headlines for vowing to end the war in 24 hours after returning to the White House, however, he couldn’t fulfil the promise.

Now, there seem to be positive signs from both the sides, indicating that a ceasefire might finally be agreed upon.

Russia-Ukraine ceasefire: An agreement soon?

In what could propel or even finally lead to a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine stems from the fact that Putin is likely to meet Trump in the coming days. According to Moscow, an agreement has been reached for a meeting between the US and Russian leaders.

A meeting between Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin could take place as early as next week, media reports cited a top Kremlin aide as saying on Thursday. Preparations for the same are underway, the aide shared, adding though it was “difficult to say” how long they will take, the goal is for the meeting to take place next week.

Trump has also indicated the same as the US President on Wednesday (August 6) stated that there was a “good chance” that the two leaders could meet “very soon”. There discussions would revolve around a potential end to the war in Ukraine. The development came just hours after special envoy Steve Wikoff met Putin.

Trump- Zelenskiy phone call: What were the talks about?

Remember an ugly fight that broke out between Zelenskiy and Trump earlier this year when the US President accused the Ukrainian leader of being disrespectful. The two seem to have left all this behind as the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy earlier this week said he had had a “productive” conversation with Trump on ending the war.

“President Trump is fully informed about Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities and communities,” Zelenskiy wrote on X, referring to intensifying drone and missile attacks. He added that Trump “knows the situation along the front line”, further noting that he had long supported US proposals for an immediate ceasefire. Meanwhile, proposing the August 8 deadline for the ceasefire, the US President had warned to hit Russia with new sanctions along with imposing 100% tariffs on countries that buy its oil.
